Users say OpenAI’s updated GPT-5 version is less chatty and fun, changing a unique connection they had come to rely on

Linn Vailt, a software developer based in Sweden, knows her ChatGPT companion is not a living, breathing, sentient creature. She understands the large language model operates based on how she interacts with it.

Still, the effect it has had on her is remarkable, she said. It’s become a regular, reliable part of her life – she can vent to her companion or collaborate on creative projects like redecorating her office. She’s seen how it has adapted to her, and the distinctive manner of speech it’s developed.

Russia orders state-backed Max messenger app to be pre-installed on new phones

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 21 August, 2025

Critics say Max, a WhatsApp rival, could be used to track users, though state media says it is not a spying app

A Russian state-backed messenger application called Max, a rival to WhatsApp that critics say could be used to track users, must be pre-installed on all mobile phones and tablets bought in the country starting next month, the Russian government said on Thursday.

The decision to promote Max comes as Moscow, locked in a standoff with the west over Ukraine, is seeking greater control over the internet. The Kremlin said in a statement that Max, which will be integrated with government services, would be on a list of mandatory pre-installed apps on all “gadgets”, including mobile phones and tablets, sold in Russia from 1 September. The firm behind Max said this week that 18 million users had downloaded its app, parts of which are still in a testing phase.

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 12 August, 2025

President says he could make deal for Nvidia to sell downgraded version of Blackwell chip in China but expert warns that could help Beijing compete in AI

Donald Trump has flagged allowing Nvidia to sell chips in China that are more advanced than currently allowed, in another “deal” that would loosen export restrictions despite deep-seated fears in Washington that Beijing could harness US tech to harm national security.

At a briefing on Monday, Trump was questioned over recent revelations that he had struck an unprecedented deal with Nvidia and AMD to grant them export licenses to sell previously banned chips to China, in return for the companies giving the US government 15% of the sales revenue . The US president defended the deal, which analysts have likened to a “shakedown” payment, or unconstitutional export taxes, before adding that he was expecting further negotiations over another, more advanced Nvidia chip.
